Art Deco & why some styles never go out of fashion

Symmetry, tick. Elegance, tick. Geometry, tick.

If you hadn’t quite guessed it, we take major interiors inspiration from the Art Deco movement.

This period is well known for its luxurious, decadent style – designers of the time used exotic woods, geometric patterns and rich jewel tones.

Originated in Paris in the 1920s, Art Deco quickly cemented its home in New York with the Rockafeller Centre, Chrysler Building and of course, the Empire State Building becoming icons of the world.

But 100 years on, the aesthetic still looks as modern as ever.

For us, the most recognisable of Art Deco culture has to be The Great Gatsby – F. Scott Fitzgerald’s masterpiece set in the Roaring Twenties with the flamboyant Jay Gatsby. We love this love story. We love Baz Luhrman’s 2013 movie. And we love the fringed lampshades on the movie set!

From lavish parties to Jay-Z’s soundtrack, the colour and style is definitely something we’ve brought into our lampshade designs and styling - anyone thinking of decadent flappers, champagne fountains and tassels?

We hope our fringed lampshades can bring a little Art Deco dazzle into your own home.

Until next time Old Sport…
